Calahonda is located on the western edge of the Mijas municipality, lying between La Cala de Mijas and the border with Marbella. A vast urban area, Calahonda is home to many expats and many holiday home properties. The area is a relaxing, chilled out destination with friendly bars, restaurants and shops.

Calahonda is well known as a family friendly area with many local amenities close by. There is a miniature train that acts as a local bus, travelling from Los Cipresses to Los Olivos commercial areas, stopping at The Strip, Los Jarales and El Zoco. The “bus” will stop anywhere if you ask the driver to let you off somewhere specific. It is very easy to find everything you need in Calahonda but the distances can sometimes require a long walk, depending on where you are staying and if you have rented a car during your visit.

What makes Calahonda appealing to the many people who live in the area or the many thousands of visitors that come every year is the location and the ease of accessing the many pleasures of the entire Costa del Sol area. Calahonda is roughly 15 mins drive to Marbella and Fuengirola, with access to many golf courses nearby and excellent beaches.

Calahonda Transport

Public transport provides access to the entire coastal towns including La Cala de Mijas, Fuengirola, Elviria and Marbella. In Fuengirola and Marbella, transfers can be made to travel further east to Malaga and beyond, whereas on the other side, transfer at Marbella bus station for buses to Gibraltar, Tarifa and beyond.

Transport is also available from Calahonda taxis, some of the fastest taxis on the Coast. There are 3 main taxi ranks in Calahonda:

  • Next to the church ( closest to El Zoco )
  • Next to Mercadona, and Los Jarales
  • Next to Lidl supermarket

By law, all Spanish taxis must have a charges book, listing the prices from each destination for different times of the day.
